I took a quick look through the stats at my site to see if I could learn anything about where my visitors are coming from. Knowing more about you, the reader, gives me maybe a little more of an idea what you would actually be interested in reading more about.
On the way, I learned a few things that might help you as you try to spread whatever ideas you are trying to promote.
First write everyday if you can. My highest source of direct hits comes from a site that links to anyone that is willing to commit to a daily post. Frequent posts also keep your readers from forgetting about you. Also, since not everything you write will be any good, the more frequently you post the more opportunities you have to post something interesting. My biggest day yet (4 times normal traffic) was the day after the Super Bowl. The posts that got all the traffic were ones I would not have written if I was not in the habit of posting everyday.
Second, link to your friends blogs even if they do not have a lot of traffic. I linked to a friend I used to work with and she linked back. That is now my second highest referrer. If you do not have friends you could always make a few by linking.
Third, link to everyone. I linked to a post by an A-list blogger and the automatic track-back link has generated the third highest referrer traffic to my site.
Fourth, comment on other peoples blogs. My fourth and highest referrer sources were from the a site that I commented on a few times. Actually several (possibly most) in the top 20 referrers are site where I have commented.
Fifth, use the profile section of any online application you use to link back to your blog. This also applies to sites you have to sign-up for in order to comment on other people’s blogs. I have a few one post blogs that are just links back to my main blog. I have them since they came with the account I needed to be able to comment.
My final suggestion comes from my daily review of spam. Make sure your comments are on topic. All of your commenting and linking will do you no good if you are not relevant to the conversation. You will probably get sent to spam and then deleted with the rest.
Update: The word “you” that is bold in the first paragraph is my 100,000th published word. At least on this blog.

Thanks for a tip! I just starting to realize that when it comes to blogs your outgoing links do not delute your ranking at all… Why not to link to everyone?
