Obama (and his people) were smart in their approach, they embraced social media rather than largely ignoring it the way McCain did, and I think this had something to do with his popularity (though there were obviously other factors as well).

Preseident Obama is a great speaker and is now one of the most influential men in the world. That is news in itself so it is not surprising that he was largely covered and popular on the internet. That is a great way to appeal to a large audience.

Did you see his address to congress today? The Big-O hit another home run again. It's nice to see someone like Obama who actually cares about Americans and the middle class in office, as opposed to the rich spoiled brat who was the incumbent. I'm glad that he is so focused on getting the country back on track. First he tackled the recession and stimulus and next he will actually try to handle health care and energy.

Obama is a phenomenal communicator who captured the imagination of the public, or a very large part of it anyway. Everybody was talking about him. Politicians like him don't come along very often, so I'm not sure what media statistics or anecdotal perceptions tells us about politics and/or social media in general. It might actually be more illuminating to study the issue in the context of a lesser political battle such as the Coleman-Franken battle in MN.

Politics a LOT like marketing??? It is marketing. It is selling a person and/or an idea to the general public. And it takes a certain type of personality to put yourself before the public and say Choose me. It's not for the faint hearted or sensitive souls. Tho some who seem the most rockhard are really not; it's just a defense shield to protect.
