Power Adapter Choice

I was planning to finish my series on the Software I use and why today, but something else came up and I want to get some feed-back on it.

See, I had to put my phone on the charger this morning. I realized this about the time that I was pulling out my laptop. I decide to put the phone on the charger first but almost grabbed the power supply for my laptop to plug into my phone. Then the idea hit me. Wouldn’t it be neat if all electronics could be charged with the same adapter?

I do not think that any of the manufactures would be opposed to using a standard. They just need a neutral party to decide on it for them. And who better to make the decision than the users! So let’s vote. What is you favorite power adapter type?

I was going to use Semantic Assertions for this vote but it is not quite ready. I still wanted to go with a distributed voting option and I have been wanting to experiment with Microformats since it is a similar idea. For this experiment I would like for anyone who is willing, to use vote-links on their own blog, social-net, twitter, or other website. You can vote for multiple options if you like.

To enter your vote in a blog editor, twitter, or even in the comments of this post:

  1. Copy the link below that corresponds with the vote you want to make
  2. Paste it into your editor
  3. Make sure that it did paste in as a link (it should be underlined and in a different color than regular text)
  4. If not:
    • Right click on the link that you want and pick “Copy Link Location”
    • Select the words you want to be the vote-link.
    • Click on the button that looks like a few chain links (called “add/edit link”)
    • Paste the link into the URL field.

To enter your vote in an HTML editor:

  1. Copy the HTML code that corresponds with the vote you want to make
  2. Paste it into your editor
  3. Post or Save-and-upload.

With either method you can vote for multiple options, and you can vote against options you really do not like. I am going to start with two options and you can email me or leave a comment with other options, and I will add them. If we set everything up correctly we will be able to see the totals here.

  1. I have an uncle that works for Molex. Molex manufactures the connections that are used to power a cell phones, pda’s, laptops, ect. When I saw him over Christmas, I asked himabout Powercast, a company that has found a way to charge devices wirelessly. He thinks this could become the new standard, given enough time. The technology is pretty new, and probably has a few bugs to work out, but looks pretty promising. I blogged about it a little over a year ago, here: http://thenextreformation.wordpress.com/2007/01/30/wireless-power-anyone/

I like the mini usb option, as it not only charges my phone, ect. it also does data transfer at the same time. If someone could make the Mac laptop connection also do data transfer I would be all over that.

  2. Oh, yeah I forgot about PowerCast. I will add it.

Hey cool idea combining MagSafe and USB. It would probably be as easy as adding a magnet to a modified USB cord. It could be the new USB 3.
