Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac – Free!

UPDATE 2:

READ THIS CAREFULLY

Many people have looked at the title and then skipped to the comments to ask for a copy. THIS WILL NOT WORK! However, if you want a copy of Open Office for Mac, carefully follow these instructions.

  1. Read at least ten posts on this site.
    • You can use the links on the right to access some recent posts, or
    • You can click on the Categories link, pick an interesting category and read the most recent ten posts in your favorite category.
  2. Pick your favorite of these posts.
  3. Put a comment in your favorite post telling why you picked it.
  4. Then (and only then) put your request for a copy of Open Office for Mac at the end of that comment.

If you follow the instructions above I will send you a copy.

If you do not follow these instructions, your request will be ignored. I am not trying to be mean. I have just received a lot of requests from people who failed to read the whole post.

UPDATE 1:

This post has been pulling in a lot of traffic!! A lot more than I expected.

Guys listen, there is no way M$ is going to let you have a free copy of their most valuable monopoly. But there is a way to get out of their slimy little talons (okay not little, but you know what I mean).

First get a free copy of OpenOffice from this website. Yes it really is free. This will let you create, read, and edit, just about any file used by MS Office. Then if you want presentations or printed documents that look really nice get Apple iWork. It will produce results that will make Office users drool, at a fraction of the price. How can they do this? They do not have a legacy ball and chain to support. You may want to wait a couple of months for iWork ’09 to come out, though.

Now back to the original post……………

I am almost immune to advertising. We are surrounded by so many of them we have learned to recognize them at a glance and to move on in search of what we are looking for. But I saw an ad today that got me curious. They were offering Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac for free. Now there are only two ways that I know of to make an offer like this work.

First, you can give it away with the purchase of something else. In this case, it is not really free since the price has to be built into the other product or spread across all sales from that company.

Second, you can promise to give it to them if they complete a bunch of surveys, sign-up for a bunch of stuff, and in some cases buy other products.

You could also give something to get them in the store hoping they will buy something, but this does not work on the web.

There may be other ways, but I am not aware of them. Which is why I clicked on this ad – to see if they had invented something new. I am a sucker for “new.”

Anyway, this is where it took me.

Free Trials are far from a zero-cost decision from the customer’s standpoint. How-to articles are -toarticlesare. I think word processing needs some real software like Microsoft going to be Office’s Vista I have written about this before, but I believe that Office 2008 is going to fail. Downloads are designed specifically for Office v. Office software is still a requirement to fully take advantage of Live Office. Clip art is . This is office 2008. This is much better than Office 2004. This is here. Microsoft Office 2008 is scheduled to be released (second half of 2007). Not sure about troubleshooting this on windows rock solid reliable. Microsoft Office 2008 is there any detailed information for the product launch in Europe. Is hard to use to expose all the things that are already there and make the product easier to use” says Jones. “We wanted to make it more discoverable, to bubble up the features that people didn’t always find. Sometimes Office 2008 performs like expected at Macworld Expo 2008 in San Francisco. This is running on the iPhone. Is hard to use going to be Office’s Vista I have written about this before, but I believe that Office 2008 is going to fail. I think it’s like on sale. Sometimes Office 2008 performs like fully Vista compatible and starts up fast, works fast calculates fast. I think it’s like there any detailed information for the product launch in Europe. I think it’s like fully Vista compatible and starts up fast, works fast calculates fast. I think it’s like indeed, on schedule and will be ready to …

This one fit into the second category. I did not copy the whole page, but the rest of the page talks about completing a certain number of “offers.” Thanks, but no thanks.

Anyway, what made this interesting to me, was how they pulled together random, related content from a bunch of different sites to try make the site look legitimate to trick the machines. The results are rather interesting. The “features” do not even resemble features and after read a few of them I am not sure I am interested anymore. If the advertiser thinks the product is going to fail, is hard to use, and only performs as expected some of the time, why would I want it even if it is free. :) The sad thing is that there are probably people who fall for this in spite of the obvious nonsense “features.”

I guess the moral of the story is that shortcuts can be quite tempting, but do you really want to look as ridiculous as this website?

Update: Tabetha just linked to post by Seth Godin suggesting that you click on ads to help pay for content you enjoy. I guess if they are fun ones, like the one is this post, I am okay with that.

  31. I am a college student using a mac and microsoft word is a must during my finals right now i read all of the posts and gave my input. if i could have a copy that would be great

  32. i want word free for mac.thanks

  33. he wont give it to you!

  34. armando,

Unfortunately, you are right. I cannot give what is not mine to give.

Though, I have been giving something more valuable than “word free for mac” to each person that asked.

I specifically stated in my post that I am sending a link to OpenOffice, not Microsoft Office.

I am still amazed at how many people have commented on this post without actually reading it. I have even had someone read and comment on ten other posts without reading this one.

Oh well, at least I tried.

  35. I have wanted Microsoft word SOO badly and I really need it for school. It would be awesome if you could hook me up.

Finally found a real free one haha

  36. alrightie then.. i think i’ve fulfilled my part.. and more.. ahah it was really interesting reading your blog’s actually.. i like the block head one in particular.. and the throwing stones at glass houses.. ahah…

    thanks :D

  37. Wow, tarie! You certainly have fulfilled your part… and more. I am surprised, amazed, and grateful. You did notice that I did not require that you comment on all ten posts, right? Well, I guess you were just being extra kind. Thank you. I will be emailing you in a few minutes.

  38. Hello,

Your post is a little bit difficult to follow for a non-English reader but I think I caught the main part of it.

One question anyway : wouldn’t you recommend NeoOffice rather than OpenOffice for a Mac ? Do you see major differences between them ?

I use NeoOffice on an old G4 and – apart from some slownesses – I am fairly happy with it.

    Rgds.

  39. I particularly liked the little guy throwing bricks on top of his head…I thought it was a brilliant display of Chinese Acrobatic skills!

Please send me a copy of Open Office for Mac…I would greatly appreciate it and could use it for seminary… Thank You Luke for your generosity, and the unique way you bring people together!!! May God bless you in your endeavors over seas with the people of China!

Merry Christmas Luke and a happy new year !!! Sincerely Mark Valdes

    • That was actually Bangladesh, but it is geographically close enough, I guess he could have been ethnic Chinese. I will be following up by email shortly. Also I hid your address, since I doubt you wanted that part public.

Thank you for adding your thoughts and comments. They were a very enjoyable read.

  40. i would like some more info on the free MS office.

    thanks

  41. I would like office microsoft word, honestly help me out i just got back into college and i need this. thanks and peace

  42. Luke,

Good luck getting 100 comments—even if most of them are responding to a non-existent offer showing they didn’t read your post.

  43. For a few months I used OO and loved it! Problem is, none of my clients use it, so I wound up having to convert all my OO docs to Word, which created extra work. Is there a solution?

  44. It’s amazing that people would expect to get something free without even reading the requirements for the offer and then get upset when they don’t get the product. Then the fact that it’s not even a legitimate offer just makes it hilarious.

Hope you make it to 100! …..I think….how big an accomplishment is it if the commenters don’t even read the post?

  45. Lille and Caleb thanks for stopping by.

100 comments on this post might not be official and all that, but it is still a lot of fun.

BTW, the link to a free copy of OpenOffice is legit and it really is great software.

  46. Is there an official rules committee to adjudicate comment totals?

  47. Brad, There is a setting where you can tell it to save all files to MS Office formats as default.

Of course, the ideal solution would be to switch everyone over to OpenOffice, but for now at least they work well together.

  48. I think comments are still under the domain of common law. It would probably require a jury of peers if I were to claim this as legit – especially since two peers have called it into question. :)

    • Oh wait. I was supposed to end my comment with a question. See… I don’t even know how to comment on my own blog correctly.

How do you guys remember to always end with a question, much less come up with a good one?

  49. Hey! I guess I’m a little late in the game. I’m not sure, but I think it had something to do with Christmas and 5 children! I almost forgot what a computer was! Don’t worry, though. I came to my senses before any permanent forgetting was done!

By the way, can I have a free copy of the legit Open office? :D Just teasing!

  50. Tabetha,

Of course you can, but I think Google Docs is the best option for the type of documents you are working with. Actually I keep forgetting about it, but Zoho (which you introduced me to) is even better.

Thanks for commenting. You are my favorite reader. :)

  51. Hi Luke, Good to know about saving OO docs as Word docs, but if that’s what you have to do, why not just use Word in the first place? It’s too bad people don’t use OO. It’s a superior product and you can’t beat the price. As far as asking questions at the end of your comment, try the “don’t you think?” method. Simply tack on that phrase at the end of a simple declarative sentence. It works pretty well, don’t you think?

  52. Brad,

One reason for choosing OpenOffice, if you do not already own a copy of MonopolySoft Office, is the price difference.

OpenOffice is smaller, can be run from a USB so you can take your custom settings with you anywhere, has a simpler interface, and works on much older machines and operating systems. It is open source so a lot people have built extensions that give you access the features you want without code bloat.

But, if you already have MSO running on your machine, and are familiar with it, you might as well keep using it. I have MSO and OO but use google docs most of the time because I am sharing a lot of docs and that lets all of us edit them at the same time, but when I need to work on a complex doc I go with OO.

The don’t you think at the end does work well. It almost dares the reader to reply. If you don’t reply, it implies that you do not think, don’t you think?
    :)

  53. Oh yeah, I almost forgot, because Macs have the ability to make PDF’s built-in, but in Windows you have to buy additional software to convert Office documents to PDF. OpenOffice does this for free.

  54. Luke, thanks for the further (very helpful) clarifications on OO/MSO, and I am honored, by the way, to be your favorite reader. One wonders what sort of prize is involved for one who achieves this distinction. Back to word processing … I’ve had good luck with Google Docs, especially the sharing feature. Clients unfamiliar with Google Docs are more receptive to using it, since it works pretty much like Office programs and is web-based.

  55. Hmmm…. Looks like I am going to have to find a way to redesign the new-comment-alert email that WP sends out automatically.

It makes it look like I am sending the email directly, when in fact, I am (or someone else is) just leaving a comment.

Brad, I hate to break it to you but the “favorite reader” award was directed to my wife, Tabetha. You do, however, share second place with a few other members of the tribe. You, (and they) have been great for bring conversation to a spot that until lately has been a pretty quite place.

The biggest prize I have to offer right now is a big thanks and of course a few links. I “do follow”. Does that count as a prize?

  56. Luke, If I had read your comment more carefully, I would have realized Tabatha took that honor. How silly (and presumptuous) of me. “Do follow” does indeed count as a prize, and a nice one at that. Don’t you think?

  57. Brad, yes, I consider a “Do follow” link to be quite valuable. The “pros” are trying to make them extremely rare, but that just increases their value.

As for reading the comment more carefully, I do not consider that to be your fault. The emails that WordPress sends out are poorly designed. I think separating the comment (from the header and all those links) with white space and even a border would help a lot. Don’t you think?

  58. Luke, good ideas! You should consider adding those design elements to your blog’s comment areas. (See how effective the Don’t You Think method is?)

  59. Brad, thank you for teaching me the DYT method. I am just now learning how to participate in a conversation both online and in-person. For some people it seems to come natural. For me, it requires a learning process.

Hmm. That last sentence does not seem to be a good one to add a DYT to the end of. What do you think?

  60. my conversations are always completely different in person than online….I don’t even talk about the same stuff with some people.

It’s like a split personality disorder only achieved by going online….is that even possible?

  61. Caleb, it is totally possible and I would say, common. Different regions of the brain are responsible for different modes of communication. Each one seems capable of learning separately.

So I would say that you learn to speak based mostly on what you hear, learn to write based mostly on what you read, and learn facial/body language from what you see.

If what you read is significantly different from what you hear, you would develop to very different ways of expressing yourself, and the way you express yourself is a huge part of your personality, don’t you think?

  62. Luke … If “don’t you think?” doesn’t flow naturally at the end of your sentence, try …

    “you know what I mean?”

    “you know?”

Or, as a last resort, add this sentence: “Does that make sense?”

    Does that make sense?

  63. The DTMS method makes sense, but “you know” kind of sounds rhetorical and I am afraid that would leave the person I am talking to wondering if I meant for them to reply or not.

    You know what I mean?

  64. I think you might be right about the communication thing….if you were around me much in person, you’d note that I say very little because I like to think before I speak and conversations move too quickly to allow for that. So in person, I tend to listen a lot more and use more facial expressions than words. I think the reason I’m more outspoken online is that I have time to think about what I’m saying because it’s not always real-time.

PS- I refuse to ask a question, however, feel free to respond. =D

  65. Luke,

Just popping in to add another comment to help you reach 100!

  66. I’m really starting to question this whole “just commenting for the sake of reaching 100″ thing….for this to feel like an accomplishment, shouldn’t they be unsolicited comments, only added because of the stimulating conversation?

  67. Lille,

Thank you so much for stopping by here again. It is so neat to see this blog running around the clock. I think I am going to do a post honoring all my commenters like you just did on your blog. That is a really neat idea.

  68. Caleb,

I have to admit this is a strange post to have a long conversation on, but I am not going to pass up an opportunity to talk to friends, and it beats talking about the weather, don’t you think?

  69. I will have to agree that it’s fun to talk, although with the crazy weather here in MS, that’s not a bad conversation either.

For an actual post related question….my Mom said that her company switched to using OpenOffice recently, but she doesn’t like it. She said that she had a lot of her old files in MS Word formats and it was a pain to open them in OpenOffice. Is there an easy way to do that?

  70. Luke,

I can’t take credit for the idea of thanking commenters. I copied it from several other bloggers who do it regularly.

Commenters seem to appreciate it, and I’ve had several other bloggers copy me … copying other bloggers.

  71. Caleb,

What is so crazy about the weather?

As for opening files, is this an issue of it pointing to the wrong folder or not having the right default application set, or something else?

  72. Lille,

I am glad that you chose a good idea to copy so I could see it and copy it too. It is not like there are really any truly original ideas anyway.

Creativity is not so much making a new deck of cards as it is just reshuffling them into a new pattern, don’t ya think?

  73. Luke,

Your analogy of shuffling cards caught my attention because of my clients is known as “greatest card mechanic of all time.” He’s an amazing talent, and on top of that he’s a 5th degree black belt … and completely blind!

He uses his knowledge of cheating techniques to keep people from being cheated and also to teach values. He’s a devout Christian who has resisted “offers that can’t be refused” from organized crime to use his skills dishonestly.

I just posted a new photo gallery that has several pictures of him shuffling cards very creatively at http://richardturner52.com

  75. hey Luke…

actually, i’ve used previous iterations of OpenOffice and it is not that bad.

actually, one thing i love about it, is its native ability to save to PDF.

    cheers,

    george

  76. Luke,

just coming over from Brad Shorr. Haven’t tried Open Office yet but I am thinking of buying a new laptop in the next months and I am also thinking of using Open Office. Are there any significant differences between Microsoft Office and Open Office (beside the fact that one is free and the other one isn’t?)

    • Ana C. Sanchez

I chose this post because it’s exactly the question that I had, and that certainly was answered, I am new with the macs, but I really want to learn how to use it. besides I spent so much buying my computer that there´s no money for the office, it would be a great favor if you send it to me.

  77. well the weather in Mississippi is always crazy, but this year it’s been insane. There’s just something odd about being below freezing one day and wearing shorts and a t-shirt the next.

The files…..I don’t know. I think she said they had templates for certain different kinds of files and she has trouble converting the templates to an OO format. She also said that their IT department wrote a code to “fix” it and it didn’t help at all. So I don’t know what exactly the problem is. I will ask her and try to get back to you though.

  78. Lille,

Wow, that is impressive. I was talking with a friend a couple of days ago about how professional card handlers can get the card they want out of a shuffled deck. I will have to show him this site.

Thanks for sharing. You guys (the tribe) are amazing!

  79. George,

Thanks for stopping by. OpenOffice does have some pretty handy extras. What version version(s) were you using? Version 3.0 seems to be pretty good step forward, but I did not use the earlier versions extensively, so I cannot make a full comparison.

  80. Ulla,

Thank you for joining the conversation!

It seems like some of the menu items are in different places, and someone said the find and replace was better in OpenOffice. I can’t remember what it looked like in MS, and I forgot to install MS Office on this computer (I try to keep it handy for support questions).

I guess the biggest difference besides price is size, because OO does not have the weight of legacy code. You can install OO on a thumb-drive.

What are your favorite features in Word beyond basic text formating (i.e. what features do you use that Word can do and WordPress cannot)? If you make a list of features that are important to you I can check to make sure they are all here.

  81. Luke,

Richard Turner has a series of videos showing all kinds of card “tricks” though he doesn’t like the word “tricks” since everything he does is skill rather than trickery. He has excerpts of the videos posted on YouTube and on his site.

People are amazed at what he can do and often don’t know he’s blind. He has learned to look people straight in the eye and even looks down at the cards during his performances like he’s seeing what they are.

I’ve even seen comments on his YouTube videos that he can’t be blind. But I know he is. He and I went to conference together a couple of years ago. My husband drove us downtown every day, then I wheeled through the hotel on my motorized scooter with Richard holding on to my shoulder for guidance.:-)

He has such a keen sense of touch that card manufacturers hire him to test their cards. Every time they produce a new run, they send him cards for him to determine … well, I’m not sure exactly what … but something. :-)

  82. Caleb,

Yeah, we had a year like that about ten years ago. Seems like you get cycles of mild winter, cold summer, cold winter, hot summer, warm winter, nice summer, freezing winter, hot rainy summer, crazy winter, cool tornado summer, something else and start all over again.

I can’t believe you tricked me into talking about the weather, but it is an amazing work of art that is a joy to watch (but not always to experience). My favorite weather related art is the daily sunrise and sunset. That is some spectacular art wouldn’t you say?

  83. I completely agree!

and while trickery is a forte of mine, I don’t think you could call this conversation trickery. I barely said anything about the weather at all and you jumped on it….haha

just out of curiosity, when you said “cool tornado summer” were you referring to the temperature or just calling it cool?

  84. Lillie,

Re: “comments on his YouTube videos that he can’t be blind”

Man, some people will not believe anything they can’t see with their own two eyes. (insert sound of a drum-roll and a cymbal, and then roll your eyes (oops their eye go again… :) I am on a roll today.))

Seriously, I have a pretty good imagination, but I have a tough time imagining what it would be like to not know what blue looks like.

The funny thing is that while we are watching his hands, we are blinded by what we can see (the back of the card) and he can see the face of every card even when they are stacked. Sounds like some kind of analogy there somewhere. Can you see it?

  85. Tornadoes are pretty cool if you can watch them from a safe distance. Unfortunately the ones I have seen were all a little too close for comfort. I was referring to the temperature, though.

Oh and it does not take much to trick the weak mind. You know what I mean? :)

  86. Luke,

You are on a roll today.

Actually, Richard had normal eyesight at birth and early childhood. He and his sister both developed an eye disease and gradually started losing their eyesight about 8 or 9. He didn’t become totally blind until adulthood, though his vision was extremely limited by his early teens.

I’m not sure whether it would be more difficult to know what you’re missing—to have seen everything then no longer be able to see it—or to never have seen it and wonder what blue is.

  87. Lille,

It does seem like it would be harder knowing what you are missing, and not being able to see it anymore, but I can at least imagine that. I can just close my eyes and think about what it would be like if I never saw again.

I guess what struck me was the thought of being born blind and having no idea what a color looks like or a texture or distance for that matter. That I cannot imagine.

I can also easily imagine what it would be like to not have any of the other senses, especially smell, but that might just be me. I am very visually oriented.

    *Everyone,*

Which of the senses is the most difficult for you to imagine what it would be like not to have?

Which one would be the hardest to live life without?

  88. well, I personally love sound. I can get around without being able to see, and I can hardly ever smell anything anyway (allergies in summer and sinuses in winter =D ). I hardly ever take the time to taste my food…..and as much as I love my sense of touch, I love hearing more. There’s just something about stopping to hear the birds sing in the trees or talking to a friend. And I don’t think I would last very long without music at all.

Forgive me for being American and selfish, but is it too much to ask to keep all of them?

  89. PS – I’d just like to add that you’re getting REALLY close to 100!!!

and number 91 (comment above) is my birth year…..which I just noticed randomly as I was typing this

  90. Caleb,

Of course, your are welcome to all the scents that you would like to keep. It *sounds* like you value sound the most, though.

The question is, can you imagine having never heard the sound of birds? I can actually imagine being deaf, but blind from birth is not some thing I can visualize. I was just curious if that was a universal blind spot or something peculiar to me.

Funny, Tabetha got her birth-year on Brad’s drive to 100. http://www.wordsellinc.com/blog/communication-skills/waiting-for-goodbye/ (search for #77).

  91. I’m a little late on this conversation, but I used to say, “ya know” all the time, and my dad actually asked me to stop saying it because it got annoying. So I guess a little variety in how you invite others to take part in the conversation is good. Ya know? :)

  92. I don’t know. I can’t really imagine being born without any of my senses, but hearing and sight are definitely my favorites.

I popped over to Brad’s blog to see what the 77th post was and realized that he doesn’t have the little numbers in the corners!!! I actually had to count to 77! *gasp*

but seriously…..the numbers really are a great idea when doing something like this

  93. Caleb,

I’m impressed that you could count that far! I was only teasing at first, but it is impressive to get that far and be able to keep count after getting distracted reading this and that interesting comment.

    Luke,

    Just 4 more!!!!!

  94. Caleb,

Whenever we left a comment it told us the total number at that point so we knew which number we were on, but not having numbers on earlier comments was limiting at times but Tabetha actually put “#77″ in her comment, I figured people could just search on that page for #77 and be able to find it. Sorry I sent you counting. At least it was not comment number 1977 :)

  95. Tabetha,

Re: 94: I guess I might need to learn a few more techniques/methods for variety. What do you think?

  96. Well, here is #99. Almost there!

  97. ooh! ooh! ooh! Am I number 100?! If not, I am number 101, and you still made it!!

    CONGRATULATIONS!!!! You made it!!!!!

I love you, my favorite blogger!!!

  98. Congrats on posting comment #100! But, no *you* are not number 100. You are #1 … at least in my book.

    I love you!

  99. missed it by just a few minutes! sadness….

oh well. I can be 101!

I did get distracted a few times, so I wasn’t entirely sure if my count was accurate or not, but when I got to 77 it turned out to be the right post =D

  100. well way to kill that Luke….I guess I’ll have to be 102…and 103

  101. Luke,

    Congratulations!

  102. Luke,

    Congratulations, you reached 100 posts.

Yes, I think that one of the most important things with these types of offers is (a) to read the fine print very carefully, and (b) if anything is reject the offer if there is anything remotely suspicious or untoward with respect to the offer.

  103. Apologies,

I meant one hundred comments, not posts.

    Anyhow, well done.

  104. Apologies,

    I meant 100 comments, not 100 posts.

  105. Luke, Congratulations! You’ve blasted right through the 100 barrier. How does it feel?

Caleb is right … I need little numbers. How can that be done?

And kudos to Tabetha for her brilliant refinement: “Ya know?”

  106. Caleb,

Sorry to have taken 100 and 101, we both just happened to walk into the room and refresh at the right time. Both of our computers were in the same room at the time.

Thank you so much for being a huge part of getting to 100 and making the last day of the year a special one.

That was pretty cool that you counted all the way to the birthday post. That was a very interesting set of 119 comments, don’t you think?

  107. Lille,

Thank you so much for helping me reach 100. This was a lot of fun!

  108. Andrew,

Are you trying to push on toward 200 with 3 posts in a row? :) Just kidding.

Thanks for stopping by and adding a little virtual sunshine.

  109. Luke,

thanks for your answer to my question – my most important question regarding Open Office and MS Office is: Can Open Office “understand” or “read” MS files, and the other way round? And does Open Office has something like Word graphics included?

Thank you so much for your offer to answer possible questions, and I deeply enjoy this conversation here! As the end of the Old Year is coming fast here in Berlin, I wish you and everybody here on this blog all the best for 2009!

  110. Brad,

Most of all, thanks to you. Your contribution has been huge. I would not have made it without you. Actually, I would not have even tried, but I am so glad you came up with the idea and saw it through to completion. You made my day… and my year!

I think you said you had someone helping with technical stuff, if not I will do it for you. Should be that all you have to do is change your comment <ul> to a <ol> in your theme but it might require a little CSS too.

  111. Yeah, I didn’t read all of the conversation over there, but what I read was pretty interesting.

By the way, I don’t think I congratulated you earlier. So congratulations! 100 comments is a big accomplishment even if a lot were bogus. The last half (the actual conversation) came pretty quickly. This has only been going on a couple days now. So Congrats!

  112. Hi Luke, Only too happy to help! Your combination of sly wit and really helpful information has made me a BIG fan.

  113. Brad,

I can feel the cold blast from that fan all the way up here. I was wondering why the temperature dropped 40 degrees over night. :)

    Seriously though, wow, thanks!

  114. what a joke! Open office is free anyway

  115. DWoo,

I take it you did not read the whole post. That’s okay, you are alone. Take a look at the full post and then check out the related posts for even more fun.

Sorry, but the joke is on you this time. :)

  116. Is it possible that you meant “you are NOT alone?”

  117. Caleb,

You are totally right. Unless I forgot to say “not” again. :)

  118. If that were the case, you probably would’ve just said “wrong”

  119. Actually, to say someone is not totally right is significantly different than saying they are totally wrong.

Is the opposite of “1″: “-1″, “0″, “-infinity”, or even “+infinity”?

  120. point taken. But in this situation I was either right or wrong. You either did or did not mean to type “not,” so there wasn’t really any middle ground.

  121. Once again you are totally right. :)

Which reminds of this conversation from Fiddler on the Roof.

    Mendel: Where are you from?

Perchik: Kiev. I was a student in the university there.

Innkeeper: Tell me. Is that the place where you learned how not to respect your elders?

Perchik: That is where I learned there is more to life than talk. You should know about events in the outside world! Careful, my paper.

Innkeeper: Why should I break my head about the outside world? Let the outside world break its own head.

Tevye: He is right. As the Good Book says, “If you spit in the air, it lands in your face. ”

Perchik: Nonsense. You can’t close your eyes to what’s happening in the world.

    Tevye: He is right.

Avram: He’s right and he’s right? They can’t both be right.

Tevye: You know, you are also right.

  122. haha…..great movie

  123. [...] Win a FREE copy of Open Office… [...]

  124. Does not work. Don’t try it.

  125. Anonymous,

Thanks for trying to help out here, but I have been trying to tell people here for months now that MS will not give them a free copy of MS Office but that they can get a better Office suite called OpenOffice for free.

If they will not take the time to read the original post I am not sure that your comment will help much.

Have you tried OpenOffice yet? It is great software, isn’t it?

  126. thank you for MO 2008

  127. I just read thru this post (w/comments). It’s actually a bit funny, Luke. I understand your frustration though. ‘There’s no free lunch.’ Anyways, this blog went into my bookmarks. Cheers.

  128. Petter,

Thanks for stopping by and for bookmarking! This turned out to be quit a fun post.

    Your kindly,

    Jere

  144. Hey,

i read your posts here. Can i get a copy of the microsoft office 08 from you? It would be great to help me with my studies.

    thanks a lot!

  145. Out of the comments i read i liked comment 4 because it asked nicely

could i please have a copy of MO for mac?

  146. thanks a lot

  147. different than saying they are totally wrong.

  148. It’s amazing that these comments just keep rolling in and people are still not paying attention to what the post is about….

    • Yes, Caleb it is. But ya know, people laugh at us for things we miss too. When you first dive into a new area of learning, there is so much to learn you have to make a few mistakes before you get the hang of it.

    • that’s right I have never seen anyone to reply to the topic

  149. Is this offer valid? I will be working on completing this if it is

  150. Simon,

Thanks for asking. OpenOffice software is free, so there is no reason to follow the steps above. All you need to do is go to openoffice.org and download the free software.

I made up the qualification process to make fun of a site that had a much more difficult and expensive process you had to do to get something “free”. Be very suspicious of any site offering proprietary software, like Microsoft Office, for free. They are almost guaranteed to be fraudulent.

OpenOffice, on the other hand, was built to be free, and makes a very nice alternative.

    • OpenOffice may free but it is a pain to use

      • Which version did you try? It has taken a while to grow-up but Version 3 seems fairly smooth.

It would of course be nice if ever free project could blow away the competition like Firefox did, but each project will attract a different set of developers, and building an office suite is incredibly big project.

For the size of the task and the pay, I think they are doing an impressive job.

  151. Thanks for the info. I have used OpenOffice before and I don’t like it much besides the fact that it is free. It just looks so outdated, on both Mac and Windows. I haven’t used it in a while so it might have gotten a couple upgrades (hopefully) between now and then but I still prefer Microsoft Office.(odd enough for someone using a Macbook and other Apple products) I thought this offer was for a free copy of Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac. I kinda skimmed through the post and only read the updates. :)

  152. I like your profile. I started to read your comments. Then I went to yours. So I went to openoffice.org and it looks like it is for PC not for mac. Can you please send me a copy of Open Office for Mac. Thanks It can’t hurt for asking.

That article made so much sense. My very husband suffers the very emotion deficiency!
And if it was me, I would rather be exceptionally good at something and weak in everything else. Then I’ld be special!

    Free Office Please!

  178. You can get open office from their site, it’s freeware.

    • Quite true, Gerry. But, there seem to be thousand that still don’t know about it. This was my attempt a few years ago to call attention to a great piece of software.
