Can The Government Solve Our Problems? Your Thoughts?

Take a look at the following excerpt. It is written in such a way that anyone should be able to find something in it to disagree with. Read it and then let’s discuss.

There is not much the government can do in the situation we find ourselves in.

They have to do what the majority requires. That majority may say that “doing good” is important, but when it comes time to vote only two things matter. Money and entertainment.

We need a massive change in the hearts and minds of individuals all across the nation. We need people who desire to do what is right even if it costs them everything.

We simply do not have the strength of character that the founding fathers had 200+ years ago. No system, of laws or of any other sort, can last without character.

We cannot ignore government. It fulfills a very important role, but it should not – cannot be a source of hope or positive change.

Okay, this is not a political blog (well, it didn’t used to be), but I am very interested in about any topic and econo-politics seems to be really popular right now, so for today at least, let’s sling some mud.

Update: Unbeknownst to me William Box was on the same topic at approximately the same time. Check out his article at: http://yishilaoshanyang.typepad.com/reflections_in_a_chinese_/2009/03/capitalism-needs-a-death-penalty.html

  1. In terms of the US government, it should only do that which the Constitution allows it to do and nothing more.

The government will never be able to solve all of our problems, especially the financial crisis, but the new administration will certainly do a lot more than the previous one.
.-= Brad Shorr´s last blog ..College Education Grants,College Money Grants =-.

  4. The government cannot solve all of our problems — however, I do have hope for this new administration. I will not rely on it to fix the economy though, because it would be like keeping a sinking ship afloat — sooner or later, you have face reality. Our economy will bounce back though, but not for a while… and certainly not because of our government, but rather because of the people.

well the government could solve all your problems…. just like their doing in the middle east…..and maybe after they finally win the drug war they can do something about all those little fat high school kids that can’t their change.

im sorry luke but i feel like your an idiot. you say that the government has to do what the majority requires than how do you explain all of the filibusters going on in congress right now?? also you claim that we are weak and we dont have the strength as the founding fathers, who based this government on tyranny and overthrowing the government, that seems like some really good qualities. also you say that people need to give up everything in order to solve a problem when that is hardly the case. our culture raises us up to be mindless and stupid to all government actions and if you think im wrong look at any of our school systems and how they operate. so i dont think we need to start throwing our money away for stupid things the government says we need, what we need is to be more intellectual and actually start thinking about what our current situation is. and lastly our government has everything to do with what we are and has everything to do with our situation that we find ourselves in because 1. they caused it and 2. we elected them so we should know they caused it.

  7. Luke Gedeon says:

Wow! That is quite a lot of words. Lets see if we can break this up into manageable parts.

    1. Filibusters only delay bills. Occasionally the delay will give you the time to bring more information to the table, but ultimately the majority wins. The government frequently does things that the majority claims not to agree with but in reality they are agreeing with the government by valuing money and their own pleasure more highly than other issues.
    2. Not sure where you got the idea that America was founded on tyranny. I can’t reply to that without further clarification. They did not actually overthrow the government. They rejected an illegitimate government’s attempt to exert itself over them.
    3. I don’t suggest giving up everything to solve a problem. But sometimes doing what is right will cost you a lot. The keywords here are “doing what is right”.
    4. I agree that the school system and media have created a culture of mindlessness. That is actually my point. Instead of hoping that government will solve our problems we need to educate ourselves and take back responsibility for governing ourselves.
    5. Sure the government “caused” all our problems, but in America the government is “of the people”. American citizens have a responsibility to be part of government all of the time not just on election day.

I do not see that we have any serious disagreement other than your disdain for the founding fathers. Have you ever gone back and read the books and letters that these great men wrote? The public school system which you yourself recognize as a problem has produced a lot of material to make these men look like monsters but a fair historian will recognize these men as really good men – not perfect by any measure, but certainly good, well-meaning, and far more educated than the average college graduate of today.
