My regular readers (hi, Tabetha) have probably noticed that I have started blogging more frequently after a long silence. Could it be that the shorter commute has allowed me more free time? Or, maybe the colder weather in Rhode Island has made me more contemplative? No, I am still incredibly busy. And, it is not as complex as the interaction between my brain and the weather.
It is quite simple actually. I just started using a new web-browser called Flock. I have had it on my computer for almost a year now, but never really took the time to try it out. But a couple months back Microsoft released LiveWriter (a blog editor) so I downloaded it. The reason I was interested was that it had a spell checker and I got my dad’s genes when it comes to spelling.
I also knew in the back of my mind that Flock was supposed to let you write blogs too. Plus you can drag and drop links, pictures, and other media. Plus it worked with del.icio.us so I decided to check if it had spell checker too. It does. Duh. So, I started using Flock as my default browser to see it was any better than it’s big brother, Firefox. And then since the button to do a blog post was right there, I clicked on it and typed a post. A little later I was reading something (in Flock) and thought of something else I wanted to blog about. I could not find any paper to write a note to myself about what I wanted to blog about so I click on the Blog button, typed a little bit and saved it as a draft. Later I went back and finished it. The rest is history.
A few days ago, my brother-in-law started telling me about a neat tool that he had just discovered called LiveWriter.
Oh yeah, I had been completely distracted by Flock and had forgotten about LiveWriter. So, I went back and tested it. It did not generate nearly as much wonky HTML as Word and Frontpage put in their webpages, but still had a little. I am not sure why Microsoft has so much trouble with HTML. Anyway, it worked fairly well but the Flock blog button is right there in the browser I use all the time. Of course if I was using IE with the new tool bar, the LiveWriter button would be right there and I could have a lot of the functionality that is part of Flock, but why switch?
Um, did I just ask why switch browsers, right after saying that I just switched to Flock? Yes, I did. But, actually Flock is a code branch of Firefox with a bunch of neat stuff to make it easier to blog and create/share other types of content (pictures, pod casts, links). I have been using Firefox for a long time and so switching to Flock was more like upgrading. It is built on the same core, which means it is cross-platform, small, robust, fast, super-configurable, standards compliant, and makes web-pages look better.
