Features!? Features!? Calling all features!

The newest release of WordPress coming out in a few days is all about features. Which features, are up to you. A few days ago I made a call for new feature requests. Read that post if you are curious about what made all this possible.

For today I want to know what features you would like to add to your blog. Did you know that a WordPress blog can do just about everything a computer can plus a little?

People have used WordPress for contact lists, CMS, social media sites, online galleries, magazines, catalogs, games, bookmark database, spreadsheet, and toothbrush. Once you get to know and love WordPress you start finding more and more ways to use it to solve every problem and fill every need.

What areas do you think need the most improvement? Some possibilities are:

  • Comments
  • Tags
  • Linking to old posts (Archives)
  • Blogroll
  • Calandar
  • Categories
  • Administration area
  • Integration with social media sites (FaceBook, MySpace, Ning)
  • Post editor / New Post
  • Email
  • Pictures
  • Sidebar
  • Widgets
  • Twitter
  • Database
  • Search
  • Rollerblading

If you have seen anything on my blog or anybody else’s and thought, “Man, I wish my blog had that”, now is the time to mention it. I am going to be posting soon to tell you how to add all the requested features and more to your blog.

And the best part is that it is so easy to do.

So, what features do you want?

I think I quite like the comment section.

But I nerver use the calenda bit.

Maybe I will try to use it and tell you what I’m thinking about it.

  2. WoW Goud says:

Excellent, Social marketing is an adaptable approach, increasingly being used to achieve and sustain behaviour goals on a range of social issues, it is a very good post .

    Cheers,

I think the uploading pictures should be changed. Its actually a major pain. So many times I upload a picture and try place it with the text around it and it is difficult. I have spent hours trying to make one picture perfect.

  4. I would like to have some plugins embeded by default, like CommentLuv for instance.

  5. Luke Gedeon says:

    Garage,

The gallery is a major focus of 2.8, and in the mean-time there are several alternate gallery managers. I am working on a review, but here is a raw list of several of them:

    NextGEN Gallery

NextGEN Smooth Gallery – use with NextGEN

    Dynamic Content Gallery

    PhotoXhibit

    AWSOM Pixgallery

    Auto Post Images (API)

    Page Flip Image Gallery

    WPG2

    Post Thumb Revisited

    Lazyest Gallery

    Gallery Widget

    Gallery Widget Pro

    WP PicLens

    NextGEN-ImageFlow

    PhotoQ Photoblog Plugin

    Scissors – crop and resize

    Thumbnails Manager

    G4B Photo Gallery

    Yet Another Photoblog

    123,

One of the toughest jobs of a developer is deciding what to leave out. The beauty of systems that support plugins is that users can add whichever features are important to them. The WP team does watch which plug-ins are most commonly added and considers them for core. CommentLuv does seem to be catching on so it might go core soon. It might not though because of disqus and other options. If you leave it as a plugin, the users have more choice, and that is good, right?

Also if they allow CommentLuv to develop separately it may get accepted as a plugin for multiple blog systems which would increase its value. I am not sure CommetLuv wants to be assimilated. :)

  7. Andra says:

I like a comment and tags section becouse you can send traffic to your site.

  8. Saras says:

    thank for list plugin

  9. I need easy Gallery for all photos (preview) on 1 page and Preview should be a link on post with photo

  10. Great stuff. Well personally the gallery has been my only problem. Not too much of a problem but I personally thought it could have some improvements. Anyway, as I see it will be looked in to I’m looking forward to see a really awesome gallery :) Thanks Luke.

  11. Love me says:

    Most needed is gallery!

  12. Kent coast says:

Being able to re-upload gallery items would be handy, and tagging gallery items.

  13. Voip top says:

Try CommentLuv plugin. And survey section looks horrible.

  14. herry says:

wow that was a lot of informations bro…. i havent use wordpress yet… i used blogspot. hehe any post related to it… :)

  15. Luke Gedeon says:

    herry,

Blogspot/Blogger is not open source so there is not a lot we can do to change or improve it. I did do one post about it, though. http://luke.gedeon.name/ask-luke-stats-tracker-for-google-blogger.html

  16. You have an awesome list of plugins.

  22. Kerry says:

Can you provide more information on this?

  23. Luke Gedeon says:

    Kerry,

If you have specific questions I could point you to individual posts, but if you are just wanting to learn more about WordPress in general try the find box, halfway up on the right. I talk about WordPress a lot.

  24. Kerry says:

Where can I subscribe to your rss? You have good posts :)

  25. Luke Gedeon says:

    Kerry,

Thank you. In the top right corner, just under the blue bar is a link that says, Subscribe to RSS. Depending on which feed reader you are using, you can click on that link, or copy it into your feed reader.

If you are looking for a good feed reader, I suggest http://www.google.com/reader/ or http://www.feedly.com/. The first is simpler the second looks nicer. Let me know if you need any help setting that up.

If you are wanting to subscribe by email, you can visit http://feeds.feedburner.com/lukegedeon/, where there is a place to enter your email address. Or, you could reply to this comment with the word “email” and I will set it up for you. It does not get any easier than that does it?

  26. I found your blog on google and read a few of your other posts. I just added you to my Google News Reader. Keep up the good work. Look forward to reading more from you in the future.

  27. I agree with the comment about deciding what to leave out… That is the hardest job for a developer. What do you leave as a plugin and what becomes part of the framework? WordPress had a great plugin directory and great contributors, but it would be nice to improve the buiilt in images uploader and editor. Take a look at Plone, I think this would be a good example of a user friendly image uploader and editor for wordpress to emulate.

  28. Luke Gedeon says:

I would say that image management has got to be the weakest part of WordPress. That is supposedly the next major project.

  29. advancement says:

Outstanding post with useful and insightful recommends!

I note them for my action. Thanks.

  30. Thank you, I really need to know this before taking action. DO you do SEO?

  31. Luke Gedeon says:

    Drupal,

I haven’t really tried specifically to SEO this site, but I am familiar with what search-engines want and have tried to make my site as SEF as I could with limited time.

  32. I found your blog on google and read a few of your other posts. I just added you to my Google News Reader. Keep up the good work. Look forward to reading more from you in the future.

  46. SpikeyByte says:

You know WordPress is a fantastic source for both business and the home user but I do agree that the lack of upload structure has let itself down a little. SO many addons available for such a popular blog service yet no updates on this little snag.

Excellent blog post and I will certainly be keeping updated on this next best update from WordPress. Hopefully it will be sooner rather than later.

  47. grocery bags says:

I see you got a pile of plugins that can really be useful for newbies. I got what I was looking for. Gallery managers will be of great help.

  48. Luke Gedeon says:

I am glad this list helped you. I really like your site.
