Every time I see the government "regulators" pointing at the banker, who in turn point at the brokers, who in turn point at the borrowers, I am reminded of this clip from Casa Blanca: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Gf8NK1WAOc

Oilfield,

Corruption should be prosecuted, but when it is this common, it really is not possible. The majority of those who are able to prosecute are also part of the group requiring prosecution.

There is not much the legal system or government can do in the situation we find ourselves in. We need a massive change in the hearts and minds of individuals all across the nation. We need people who desire to do what is right even if it costs them everything.

We simply do not have the strength of character that the founding fathers had 200+ years ago. No system, of laws or of any other sort, can last without character.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and real-life, but in real life, the difference is huge.

I agree that it is fair for someone who has done wrong to by fired, but the guilt for this economic crash is so wide-spread that by the time you fire everyone that you should there will be no one left to do the firing.

Actually China should fire everyone in America, because we make horrible employees, but they don't want to because we also are their customers.

This is true not only between countries but in every business everywhere. The supply line is drawn as a straight line from raw goods to consumer, but really it is a series of circles that loop back from the consumer to every point in the process. If you fire all your employees, your customers will have no money to buy your stuff.

Same thing happens if you bankrupt every company that deserves to be bankrupt. That would be fair but then where will you buy gas, groceries, and everything else. And where are you going to get the money? Even if self employed, most of your customers work at companies that should (if theory were real and all things were fair) be allowed to go into bankruptcy.

At this point the problem is so huge and wide-spread that the government cannot fix it with a bail-out or without one. The bailouts are irrelevant now. The only thing that would really help is a massive cultural change. And, that is outside the realm of government, business, and economics.

I agree that firing someone should never be taken lightly; but when it comes down to it, you have to do what's necessary. Firing someone isn't just about removing a dishonest or unethical person. It's also about setting an example for everyone else to let them know their job isn't unconditional. There must always be consequences for an employees actions. I agree that it is costly to just retrain another employee however. In terms of the big companies, I feel that there is no difference. There should be consequences, in this case bankruptcy.
