The perfect beauty of non-perfection

Name one thing in nature that is perfectly flat, perfectly round, perfectly parallel, or perfect in any other way. Go ahead. That is what the comment section is for. Hmm…. no comments. That’s what I thought. (Of course, that is nothing new, but anyway).

Nature does not do perfect. Okay nature does not do anything but you know what I mean. Grass does not grow as parallel lines and even very structured things like crystals have some variation. If you look closely a people’s faces you will notice that they are not even symmetrical. In fact, if you edit a picture by copying one half of a face and flipping so that the second side is a mirror image of the other, the human eye will instantly recognize it as not quite right even though the observer may never discover why.

It is variety, the uniqueness of the individual, off-centeredness, and curves rather consistency, and straight lines that make beauty. No one has come up with a standard for measuring beauty that I would agree with. In fact for me to agree, it would have to match Tabetha exactly, and then those who like black hair and those who like blond hair would not agree. So I guess we will never have a universal standard. About the only thing we can say for certain on the topic is that imperfections are an essential part of beauty.

The Chinese leadership seems to have forgotten this in the planning of the Olympics.

They have worked very hard to make everything about the Olympics absolutely perfect. They have even gone to the trouble of finding the perfect voice and matching with the perfect face, using lip-syncing. Many people outside China consider that going a bit too far. Some are complaining about psychological damage to the kids or that it might hurt their career. I doubt that will be a problem, but for a different reason, I think this was a huge mistake.

China already has a reputation for trickery and a beauty that is only skin deep. Everything looks great at the surface but if you dig a little deeper you will find corruption and rot. They are focused on saving face. It is all about appearances. It is a bit ironic that by working so hard on shaping perception, they have created a perception of only only caring about perception and not reality.

The biggest problem with the lip-syncing is that after a few things are discovered to be fake, everything is assumed to be fake. China desperately needs and wants the world to trust it, but getting caught faking it is no way to build trust.

The amazing thing about people who try to fake something, is that the only ones they fool are themselves. The easiest person to con is a con-man. The easiest person to sell expensive and worthless stuff to is a salesman. The Chinese government does not even realize how obviously fake their whole world is. They brutally abuse their people to maintain an image that anyone on the outside can see right through. They free a few prisoners to impress a visiting dignitary and then imprison twice as many so they will have more available to release next time.

China is land of great natural beauty filled with naturally beautiful people. It is in China’s national interest for the government to focus more on reality and less on outsiders perception. If they will do what is right, people will catch on. If they continue to fake, they will never gain our confidence.
