Blog Reader Critical Mass

A conversation started in Robert Scoble’s comment section that got me wondering if there is some magical number that you can reach after which your blog will be able reach the “right” audience or if it is widely different for each blogger.

The right audience that I am talking about is a group of people (probably not all of them, but at least some) that are interested in the topics you talk about, and are willing to keep the conversation going either in the comments or on their blogs.

Would you take a minute to help all of us get a little more info on this topic? I will post results as they come in.

  1. I think this is a different number of each blogger. Really what you are looking for is not a number but a percentage of the potential audience. Even that is a variable though. I write for high school computer science teachers (well mostly) and I estimate that there are about 5,000 of them in the US. I believe I am reaching between 100 and 200 hundred of them. I’d feel a whole lot better if I was reaching 20% or 1,000 of them. But I also believe that I am reaching a much larger percentage of the number of people in my audience who actually read blogs. So if there are only 400 who read blogs having 200 of them read mine would be pretty good.

The rest of the readers who read are gravy. They contribute to the conversation, send me links, and generally support my mission (if I can use that word) so I welcome them. And I try to include them as much as possible at least in part hoping they will lead more of my primary targets to my blog.
